"discuss in forums" button for items

a button or link on each item that would correspond to a new or existing forum post. the first user to click it starts a thread, and every subsequent user is directed to that thread. i don't really know my way around php, so i have no idea about the logistics of this. configuration for various forums might be a pain. i use smf, but phpbb and others have to be considered, i s'pose.. it might not differ from the existing Blog This plugin, they are similar in scope, i think.
